Professor Fitzgerald [2014–24]
The Professor Fitzgerald project is a personified allegory of the harm caused as we accelerate our technological innovations without sufficient regard for the risks involved. In the format of do-it-yourself videos, a terminally ill professor teaches us how to build our own immortalizing devices, despite continually injuring himself. He walks a psychosomatic tightrope between enriching and prolonging his life while losing aspects of his humanity in the process.
There are five documented devices: Artificial Heart, Dialysis Machine, Cryogenic Chamber, Surgical Robot, and the Urn Rocket. Each video is accompanied by artifacts from production including sculptures, drawings, prints and paintings questioning the promise of technology in our lives.
“When you invent electricity, you invent electrocution...every technology carries its own negativity, which is invented at the same time as technical progress.” ― Paul Virilio, cultural theorist
